At Make48, we’re all about hands-on learning and showing the next generation what’s possible when innovation meets industry. Recently, our co-founder had the pleasure of taking that mission to his working farm.
On Monday, April 13th, Tom Gray opened the gates of Cannington Farms in Kansas City to a truly impressive group: the students and staff of the Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Animal Institute.
A Convergence of Talent
The farm tour was one of the highlights of a massive three-day experience that brought together 100 students from 41 colleges and 31 different states. These aren’t just students; they are the future of animal science and agricultural leadership in America.
During their time at Cannington Farms, the group got up close and personal with the daily operations of a working farm. They met Tom’s flock of sheep, cows, and chickens, and of course, they were greeted by his faithful companion, Joe the dog.
Watching these young leaders engage with the land and the animals reminded us why we do what we do. Innovation isn't just about 3D printers and shop tools; it’s about the systems that feed our world and the people who have the vision to lead them.
Beyond the Barn
The farm visit was just one piece of a busy schedule. Tom also hit the road to represent Make48 throughout the Institute's events, including:
Dinner & Discourse: Engaging in talks about the current state and future of the ag-industry.
Career Roundtables at K-State Olathe: Mentoring delegates and sharing insights on how to bridge the gap between education and a professional career.
Industry Networking: Building connections that help strengthen the agricultural community here in Kansas City and beyond.
Supporting organizations like the AFA is near and dear to our hearts. Whether it’s in our Innovation Classrooms or out in the pasture, providing students with real-world experiences is the best way to develop the leadership skills they’ll need to tackle tomorrow's challenges.
We want to give a huge "thank you" to the AFA for letting us be a part of this year’s Institute. Tom is still smiling from the energy these students brought to the farm, and we can’t wait to see where their careers take them!
