Safety First! The Winona Make48 Challenge is Now Streaming on YouTube!
The second stop of Make48's thrilling Season 9 is officially on YouTube! The competition, hosted this past May at Minnesota State College (Southeast) in Winona, showcased the incredible talents of seven student teams from surrounding high schools as they tackled a critical, real-world challenge.
Innovating for Industry Safety
This year’s Southeast challenge was proudly sponsored by Fastenal, a company with deep roots in Winona and a global leader in supply chain solutions. Teams were tasked with developing innovative solutions focused on Safety in Manufacturing. Over the course of 48 frantic hours, students worked to design and prototype products that could enhance workplace safety—a topic that is top-of-mind for Fastenal and the broader manufacturing industry.
The teams had full access to the state-of-the-art facilities at Minnesota State College Southeast and the invaluable expertise of our dedicated tool technicians.
The Teams and the Techs
The competition featured seven eager teams of high school students, including: DIY OR DIE, RAMHAWKS, RED HAWKS 27, THE INNOVATOR'S FORGE, WINGERS, WE FAIL FAST TOO, and PIRATES OF THE MISSISSIPPI. The event wouldn't have been possible without the commitment and team support from local companies including; Miller Ingenuity, RTP Company, Watlow, Behrens, Schwab Construction/Biesanz Stone, Riverside Integrated Solutions, Celanese, Xcel Energy, Merchants Bank, the Slaggie Capital Group, and Visit Winona.
To help bring their concepts to life, the young inventors collaborated with a wide array of expert Tool Techs and mentors. They utilized cutting-edge equipment and resources, including innovative solutions like Fastenal’s own inventory management technology (like vending machines and smart lockers) to ensure they had every tool and part they needed right at their fingertips.
This event was a perfect storm of collaboration, problem-solving, and rapid prototyping, giving high schoolers a true taste of industrial innovation and the pathway to the Season 9 Nationals!
