Nestled in the Red Cedar Valley of Northwestern Wisconsin lies the town of Menomonie. Once a bustling hub of the world's largest lumber industry, its roots trace back to the Menominee tribe, the "wild rice people" who thrived on the land for over 10,000 years.
Today, Menomonie retains that deep connection to nature, offering its residents a lifestyle intertwined with the changing seasons.
UW-Stout: Where Innovation Meets Tradition
At the core of Menomonie's identity lies the University of Wisconsin-Stout, a beacon of innovation and academic excellence. Founded in 1891 by lumber baron and visionary James Huff Stout, the university embodies his commitment to education and community development.
UW-Stout stands as Wisconsin's polytechnic university, a unique institution that seamlessly blends applied learning, research, and career-focused programs. Students are empowered to become lifelong learners, ethical leaders, and responsible citizens in an environment that fosters inclusivity and sustainability.
The university's polytechnic approach is evident in its diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs, spanning STEM, business, education, and design. UW-Stout's strong partnerships with businesses and non-profit organizations ensure that its programs remain at the forefront of industry trends, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in their chosen fields.
From October 4-6th, Make48 will call Menomonie, Wisconsin home. A dedicated group of tool techs, mentors, and volunteers will come from around the country to help the students’ prototype their ideas.
The event promises to be a powerful display of collaboration. Teams will be made up of local students, including two UW-Stout undergraduates and two SkillsUSA high school pupils, who will put their creativity and skills to the test.
The competition will take place at The Center for Innovation & Development’s Fab Lab. The Lab offers innovators, creatives and makers access to 3D printers, laser cutters and other leading-edge digital fabrication tools to bring their imagination to life.
Whether you're a seasoned innovator or just starting out, the Fab Lab is your playground. Experienced instructors are on-hand to guide those ready to take their ideas to market. From refining your concept to creating functional prototypes and crafting a winning marketing strategy, UW-Stout's Manufacturing Outreach Center is your partner in success. They work with over 135 Wisconsin manufacturing companies annually, and their network of skilled marketing professionals can help you showcase your product's unique value.
The Fab Lab's reach extends far beyond its walls. Through partnerships with global leaders like MIT, the FabLearn Community, and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, they're inspiring the next generation of innovators from students across Wisconsin to budding creators around the world.
