The energy at Vandermont was electric—powered, of course, by the sun! Our Season 9 kickoff event was a rapid mix of creativity, collaboration, and cutting-edge design. Teams faced a formidable 48-hour challenge: to engineer innovative, solar-powered solutions for modern backyard living. If you missed the action, don't worry—we've got the highlights right here!

The Challenge: Bright Ideas Under the Sun

This year's challenge, crafted with the support of our incredible sponsors RoofMaster and Signature Solar, pushed teams to think beyond conventional solar applications. The focus? Roof-integrated solutions, energy efficiency, outdoor entertainment, functional structures, and smart landscaping.

With additional support from local sponsors Arete Health, T1 Race Development, Bestagon HUB, G4 Brothers, and Westlake ACE Hardware, the teams were fully equipped to bring their visions to life.

Roofmaster®, established in 1952, is recognized for its high-quality, job-tested roofing equipment. Over the past 70 years, they've become a leading global supplier of roofing equipment. As the world's largest manufacturer and distributor in this sector, they continue to innovate and provide reliable products to the commercial roofing industry.

Signature Solar was created in 2019 with the purpose of supplying accessible and affordable solar equipment, including panels, inverters, and batteries, to those pursuing energy independence. They provide solutions for off-grid, grid-tie, and do-it-yourself solar projects. Growing from a small team in Texas, they emphasize customer success and transparent practices, aiming to make a positive impact through solar energy.

A Unique Partnership: SMU's Impact

This event marked a special collaboration with SMU's Lyle School of Engineering and their Lyle Thrive Scholars program. DIG students from the Lyle School of Engineering served as invaluable Tool Techs, while Thrive Scholars stepped up as dynamic Team Captains.

This partnership brought a fresh perspective and incredible energy to the competition, showcasing the power of mentorship and hands-on learning.

Behind the Scenes: The Power of Collaboration

Our dedicated Tool Techs included returning favorites and newcomers. Tyler Isaacs, Adam Kittrell, Luis Rodriguez, Christina Santa Lucia, Aaron Brown, Matt Rohr, Brandi Schwartz, provided crucial support and expertise. Local makers from the Bestagon HUB volunteered their services and we were thrilled to have Manuel Somarriba, Nick Tutle, and Ian Thorburn working alongside our team.

We're also incredibly grateful to our partners at Makerbot/Ultimaker, Dynamism, ShopBot Tools, Epilog Laser, Fastenal, Lincoln Electric and Onshape for providing the cutting-edge tools that made these innovations possible.

The Pitch: Showcasing Innovation

As the clock ticked down, teams prepared to present their prototypes and pitches to our esteemed panel of judges: Dyke Shipp (KFC Corp.), Sharrell Howard (Make48/DeBruce Foundation), and Byron Sanders (Arete Health).

The judges were impressed by the creativity and technical skill on display, making their final decisions incredibly challenging. After careful deliberation, the results were in:

  • First Place & Nationals Qualifier: Bolts & Brains! They took home the $2,000 prize and a stunning custom-made trophy crafted on-site by the tech team.

  • Second Place & Nationals Qualifier: The Other Guys! They also earned a spot at Nationals and received a beautiful trophy created by maker, Lucas D’Angelo (@mannmadeinma)

  • The DeBruce Foundation Award for Best Agilities: Tippy Toe Titans! Their teamwork, adaptability and problem-solving skills truly stood out.

Looking Ahead:

We're excited to share the dynamic sizzle reel of the event! Our film crew captured all the unforgettable moments and innovative ideas. Stay tuned for more updates and behind-the-scenes content!
