Construction Inclusion Week 2025 - Building a Stronger Foundation

From October 13–17, 2025, the construction industry will observe Construction Inclusion Week (CIW). This annual event is a vital reminder of the industry's commitment to promoting opportunities and enhancing the professional experience for all construction professionals.

At the heart of this movement are the next generation of leaders already tearing down barriers—like the inspiring team of strong women from the Women in Construction Club (WiC) at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE).

The Power of STEM and a Diverse Workforce

A robust construction industry is the backbone of every thriving community and resilient economy. To bring ambitious, modern projects to life, the industry needs a diverse array of skilled professionals, including craftspeople, engineers, and visionary leaders. Recognizing this growing need, we must commit to reimagining how the industry attracts, nurtures, and retains talent.

The path forward is clear: by investing in the next generation of skilled workers and fostering welcoming, respectful workplaces where every individual can grow and excel, we are building a stronger, more resilient foundation for the future.

MSOE’s Raiders in Construction

We had the privilege of meeting an exceptional team from the Women in STEM competition: the Raiders in Construction (RiC). This team was formed through the MSOE Women in Construction Club, an organization dedicated to supporting women in construction-related fields of study through professional growth, community bonding, and public outreach. The club’s work shows how focused support can cultivate the leaders of tomorrow.

The RiC team, consisting of Alexis Fleegel, Amelia Brandt, Olivia Beals, and Tahlia Fish, brought a diverse set of skills and majors to the competition. As Olivia Beals explained, the name "Raiders in Construction" was a deliberate choice, reflecting their involvement in the construction field and their proud MSOE mascot.

Formed through a volunteer system within WiC, the group was intentionally selected, representing the breadth of talent needed in modern construction. What makes the Raiders in Construction so emblematic of CIW’s mission is the sheer diversity and depth of their individual aspirations:

Alexis Fleegel, a rising senior in Civil Engineering with a Structural specialty, plans to pursue a Master's degree. She is open to relocating for job opportunities with travel potential, showcasing a desire for complex, global challenges.

Amelia Brandt, a rising junior in Architectural Engineering specializing in Mechanical systems, anticipates a career in construction, potentially in project management, valuing the vital roles of people and communication.

Olivia Beals, a rising sophomore in Civil Engineering who is also involved in softball and Army ROTC, will commission as an Army officer after graduation, where she plans to serve for four to five years, utilizing her engineering degree in a critical service role.

Tahlia Fish, a senior in Architectural Engineering with a Mechanical Systems specialty and a former WiC leader, intends to enter the professional world after graduation, seeking diverse and impactful experiences.

These women are not just studying construction; they are actively shaping its future, demonstrating that success in a historically male-dominated field is achieved through diverse backgrounds, unique skill sets, and a shared commitment to excellence. Their stories reinforce the fact that inclusion is not just a moral imperative, it’s a powerful engine for industry innovation and growth.
