We are happy to announce that the full competition is now available to stream on our official YouTube page. With just one click, you can dive into the action and witness the brilliance of these young innovators anytime, anywhere.

Breaking Barriers in 48 Hours

This event was a historic first for Make48. While women currently represent only 35% of the STEM workforce, we believe visibility, mentoring, and community are the keys to changing those numbers. This unique 48-hour challenge provided a powerful platform for young women to step into the roles of engineers, designers, and project managers – demonstrating that the future of STEM is bright and inclusive.

“This was such a FUN event!  We’ve come a long way since the very first Make48 with inclusivity, and it was really inspiring to see companies support this event like no other.  I hope this is just the first of many events where we get to showcase what women can do when they are empowered, “ Amy Gray, Host of Make48 said.

The clock was ticking on the Kansas City Art Institute campus, as teams were tasked with designing a physical product for a modern "She Shed" – a personalized sanctuary ranging from wellness retreats to creative studios. Their mission? Create a product that either revolutionizes the interior experience or integrates seamlessly with the exterior. The results were top-notch.

A Community-Powered Event

An initiative of this scale required a village. We are incredibly grateful to our local sponsors and partners who invested in the next generation of women in STEM: Westlake ACE Hardware, Hovey Williams, Neighbors Construction, SportingKC, Xena Workwear, KC Home Builders Association, JE Dunn, Women Developing WI, KC STEM Alliance, BioForward, Sunset Investors, Heartland Black Chamber, KC Blind All Stars, Reinhardt Construction, SM Wilson, MEM, SOA Architecture, Fervo Energy, Kiewit,, K-State Salina, TREKK Design Group, Thornton Tomasetti, Barr Advisory, Rhys Ivy, Clarkson Construction, Garver, Global Earthworks & Underground, Walnut River Brewery and Boulevard Brewery Company.

Success at Make48 isn’t just about the teams, it’s about the Tool Techs who bring their ideas to life. Experts from ShopBot, MakerBot, UltiMaker, Lincoln Electric, KCAI, Garmin, Burns & McDonnell, and Operation Breakthrough worked tirelessly alongside the students. Beyond building prototypes, these technicians even crafted three custom-made trophies to honor the winning teams.

In a true display of “Girl Power,” the weekend was defined as much by collaboration as by the competition. Teams cheered for one another, problem-solved together, and formed bonds that will last a lifetime.
