When a global leader like Stanley Black & Decker issues a challenge, you know the bar for creativity and execution is set incredibly high. This semester, collegiate teams from across the country answered the Make48 Challenge call: “Pack it Forward.”
Students were tasked with rethinking packaging and storage solutions, finding innovative ways to make tools and equipment more organized, accessible, and efficient for the pros who use them every day.
The competition was intense, featuring top-tier engineering and design college programs. The prototypes presented were polished, practical, and ready for the job site.
Meet The Winners
A massive congratulations to the team from Illinois State University!

Their prototype, "General Purpose Saw Blade," cut through the competition to take First. This team demonstrated exceptional problem-solving and product design skills. We’re excited to see what they bring to the table at the regional competition.
Measuring up in second place was a team from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with their project "Dewalt 25’ Tape Measure."

Their approach to the "Pack it Forward" prompt showed a deep understanding of user needs and brand identity.
Securing the third spot was the team from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with "Ratcheting Screwdriver."

RIT consistently brings strong engineering talent, and this project was no exception.
We want to extend a huge thank you to Stanley Black & Decker for sponsoring this challenge. By engaging with these university programs, you are helping to shape the next generation of industrial designers and engineers.
A special thanks also goes to the faculty, professors, and mentors at these institutions. Your guidance helps bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world product development.
Do you want your students to tackle challenges from the biggest names in the industry?
We’re already seeing schools sign up for a chance to participate in the 2026–27 Make48 National Tournament. If you’re ready to give your students a chance to innovate, compete, and learn real-world skills, let’s make it happen.
