Making It Happen In Beloit

Make48 is in Beloit, WI for the sixth City Series competition of the year! Teams will compete at The Lincoln Academy to create a brand new prototype. The challenge theme for the Wisconsin state is fitting: Winter Outdoor Activities. The last time an activity challenge was given in WI (Madison 2021) the winning team, The Free Wheelers, took home the prize. They are now getting ready to launch the yard game, BocceRoll, in retail stores. [Fox47 News]

The Lincoln Academy (TLA) is a K4-12 public charter school serving Wisconsin residents. TLA is a reflection of the diversity in Beloit. Dedicated to providing an environment conducive to the learning process, TLA ensures scholars are focused on academic rigor, character development and career exploration. One of their learning models is having students focused on career exploration and creating real opportunities and choices for all graduates that match their unique skills and interests.

TLA will also be represented in the competition by two teams. The all-female team the Mighty Lions and JumpStart! They will be joined by Full STEAM Ahead, The Macho Quatro, Rock River Dinners, Team DSAT, Team 404 and The Gents round out the creatives who will tackle the challenge. Read more about the teams here.

Expert tool technicians, mentors and volunteers will help the teams get through this weekend. Tool Techs will be coming from companies such as; Airgas, ShopBot Tools, MatterHackers, Fastenal, Wet & Forget USA, Meyers Automation, Kerry Ingredients, Irontek and NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes. Volunteers and techs will also come from several education institutions in Beloit including; The Lincoln Academy, Beloit College, Black Hawk Technical College and Watertown High School. Patent attorneys, Stephan Lesavich and Paul Donovan, will be there to make sure team's ideas are not infringing on any existing patents.

A hardware run will help them gather materials for their concept. Groups will head to Harris Ace Hardware with $200 and one hour for a supply run. They carry a wide range of products for the teams to choose from and build a successful activity prototype. Fueled by our special formula aka coffee by Quantum roasters, the participants will have 48 hours to collaborate and build their ideas.

The winning team from Beloit will win $2,000 and advance to compete on Season 6 of Make48. A 3-minute highlight reel and a 27-minute episode will be produced from the event where the full episode will air on ‘This Old House’ maker channel on Roku (channel 458).
