The Power of an IDEA - STEAM opportunities in the Kansas City Metro at IDEA Space

Updated: Nov 12, 2021

Our friends at the Dan and Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space KC have an exciting job opportunity. They are seeking the inaugural Design and Fabrication Facilitator to help open IDEA Space in Summer 2022. This individual will build and teach an innovative STEAM curriculum to students and teachers across the Kansas City area, growing their comfort and confidence in STEAM-related fields. The Design and Fabrication Facilitator will bring a specialized set of skills in woodworking, metalworking, CNC, and welding.

Don’t have all of these skill sets? Don’t worry, says IDEA Space Executive Director Kellye Crockett. “We know makers love to learn and grow. If the idea of learning new things excites you, and you already have a base in one or two areas -- great! Let’s learn together and then teach others.”

What if you aren’t a certified teacher? Can you still apply? Absolutely, says Crockett. “People learn transferable skills in a wide variety of settings. If you work with youth in an after school program -- coaching or mentoring, you have a great starting place. Combine that with a great skill set in tools and machines, and you might be just the person we need.”

IDEA Space KC is a new mutually supportive K-12 learning space in south Kansas City where students and educators explore science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). It is designed to serve students from diverse neighborhoods and backgrounds, increasing their comfort and confidence in STEAM fields, and preparing them for career success in Engineering, Computer Science, Skilled Trades and Advanced Manufacturing.

About The Barstow School and IDEA Space KC

Located in Kansas City, Missouri and founded in 1884, The Barstow School is a co-educational school where students in preschool through twelfth grade develop in a challenging educational community. As originally stated by Mary Louise Barstow, the objective of the school remains “to promote sound scholarship and to give symmetrical development to mind, body and character.”

IDEA Space KC will serve Barstow School students as well as public, private and homeschool students in the Kansas City metro. IDEA Space doors will open this spring (‘22), to create consistent STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) learning opportunities early in a student’s education, regardless of district boundaries, with a focus on kindergarten- through grade 12.

The 65,000 sq. foot former grocery store will be turned into a world-class learning facility with four key areas; Makerspace, Technology Lab, Fabrication Workshop and Incubation Hub. Each space will have cutting edge tools and technology where students learn to solve problems and to develop real-life solutions.
